Affirmation therapy is the process of sending positive messages to emphasize the person’s good characteristics. This procedure may seem simple, but they are effective in instilling a sense of value in the person.

Affirmation therapy is used mostly for behavioral and emotional disorders. This includes low self-esteem, eating disorders such as overeating, anorexia, and bulimia, stress disorders, cigarette addiction, and even colds and flu. Affirmation therapy also aids in many drug rehabilitation programs since drug addiction is sometimes rooted to poor emotional health.

The need for affirmation therapy

A person’s core beliefs are developed during childhood. The family’s upbringing, early education, childhood and teen experiences, and social life all contribute to the formation of the core beliefs.

If a person had negative experiences during these formative years, these will affect his or her belief system. Eventually, the person’s belief system will influence his or her habits and behavior, and this can lead to physical, mental, and emotional health problems.

How does affirmation therapy work

Affirmation is a simple method of treating behavioral disorders. However, the reason that affirmation therapy works is deeply rooted in the complicated processes of the subconscious mind. The positive messages are sent to the subconscious in such a way that the patient will not notice the medium and will focus on the message. The subconscious mind is ready to absorb these messages and to incorporate them into the normal patterns.

The mind will then accept this new programming without the conscious mind interfering with the subconscious. Therefore, affirmation therapy intends to forgo intellect and reason in order for it to be effective.

The change in the person will now begin naturally. The person will not need to experience the pain and pressure of self-discipline nor of contradicting one’s habits. Positive actions arise from the changes in the brains programming.

In order for affirmation therapy to work, the subconscious should be prepared to accept the positive messages without resistance. Some exercises can be done in order to relax this side of the brain.

Unknown to many, each of us has done affirmation therapy at some point. Whenever we do some ‘self-talk’ we send our brains positive messages that help us overcome a problem or a stressful situation.
